Speaking to the Obsolescence of Headlights

I wrote this haiku for a poetry class that I started holding in the evenings during the latter part of my time at ICFR. A few other patients had expressed a desire to learn how to write using rhyme, meter, and other poetic devices, which caused me to teach a nightly “mini-course” in poetry. The first lesson I taught was about different famous forms of poetry, which included the haiku.

At the end of each session, I implored everyone who had sat in on the class to write a poem, each time with a different prompt or basis. During the first session, I invited them to write haikus and share them with the other attendees. To provide an example, I also wrote this poem alongside everyone else who attended my makeshift class.
