The Mountain and the Sea
This is a poem about finding common ground with someone else. It is about how turmoil can bring those with fundamental differences together. I was inspired to write this by a friend I made at ICFR. He and I had different backgrounds, but built a relationship upon the ability to recognize each other’s adversity. We relished in discovering how our respective strengths could assist in the other person’s recovery. He would administer a steady dose of advice that aided in practicing my own self-confidence. I would keenly affirm his intellect by helping him recognize his less-tapped abilities.
During my time at ICFR, I wrote numerous poems with the common thread of vivid natural imagery. The basis for this poem’s metaphorical significance arose from the desire to personify my friendship with visually conducive language regarding natural phenomena. A mountain and a body of water could not be more different from each other, but grow closer due to the shared experience of weathering the storm.
